The Wargamer Reviews RO: Ostfront 41-45

One of my favorite gaming sites, The Wargamer.com has reviewed RO: Ostfront 41-45.

Red Orchestra almost seems hell bent on going a step further in the name of realism . . .

. . . all of the game’s weapons can be supported against environmental objects in order to steady aim. By placing a weapon on sandbags or against building walls, aim is steadied and the likelihood of placing that 7.62mm round into the Soviet conscript across the square greatly improves.

Like Battlefield 2, the vehicles in Red Orchestra are key to the game’s larger maps. While most of the maps do not require vehicles to win, one of the maps in the beta demanded proficient Kubelwagon or Panzer driving skills. In Arad, there are enough tanks and armored personnel carriers for nearly every player to grab a ride. When the rounds begin developing, the game’s tank battles come to life. One of the prominently advertised features is Ostfront’s tank battles, which promise simulation-like battles at +800 meters. Whereas Battlefield 2’s tank battles tend to be close-up, first-to-fire-wins affairs, Red Orchestra’s tank battles are much more deliberate and challenging. With engagements of almost a kilometer, the challenge becomes sighting the enemy.

As someone who really enjoys the TR feel of infantry only games/maps, I have to admit I am extremely anxious to try out the RO implementation of combined arms.  Read the full review here.
