Death Messages/No Obits on RO Servers

March 23rd, 2006 by NightStalker

Oddly enough most RO Tactical Realism servers are keeping Death Messages on. I was surprised to see this, having Death Messages off has almost become a Standard for TR servers in other communities. To some its not a big deal, to others it adds to the overall experience of TR.

Lets dwell into this a bit. Having Death Messages on confirms your kill and often when players can confirm their kill, it increases the tendency for a player to lonewolf on his own working up his score rather then functioning as a teamplayer. RO doesnt really have this problem as much as other games since its very team-based but, there are still very many players who ignore the team and do their own thing. When you take away that confirmation and remove the Death Messages, players are no longer able to know whether or not they have killed their target unless it was a close encounter. Ideally having the messages off creates panic to someone that isnt used to it, this panic tells the player that he better stay close to his team and work closely with them, again this is one of the ideas behind it, some people may still ignore teamwork.

Playing several different games in the TR style, I can openly say I see much more team work being ultilized on servers that take away the ability for player to confirm their kills and see the Death Messages. This feature should be embraced by any TR clans looking for an increase in Teamwork and Realism.

This setting in the Red Orchestra ini will change death messages to totally off:
[ROEngine.ROTeamGame]
DeathMessageMode=DM_None

    I agree with what you are saying. The only reservation I have, is that there are soooo many new players (including myself, obviously), that are still learning the game. a game with a steep learning curve at that. removing the obits makes it that much harder to succeed in the game. I’d wait on removing the obits for, say, another few weeks or so. Just my 2 cents. :)

    I could not find any other servers with DM off and I was shocked. It could be as you say Heinz, admins are going with the stock settings out of the gate. Still, I am surprised by this as I assumed the a game with such high standards of tactical realism would have them off by default.

    I love the no DMs. I find it fun not knowing if I put steel on target or if they are just behind cover. I also like having to ask others on VOIP if the person we’ve been shooting at is dead or not.

    I prefer not having Death Messages. It greatly adds to the immersion of the shooter and to me makes it more of a ’sim’ and less of a ‘game’.

    i think only TK’s should be posted although its gratifying to see who you killed but also fustrating when you find out its the same person killing you. obits now on our CoD2 server are off because its an annoyance on smaller res views because it takes up so much of the screen. same happens to RO:O id rather see them disappear except to post TK’ERs

    I think you may find cause some clans still dont have a clue how to admin their servers…lol…example…us…I still have no clue how to do it….random has taken over and I am not sure if he has taken them off yet…I am pretty sure he has or will be taking them off.

    There is definitely a need for more servers with death messages turned off. It seems to be a hard sell among the existing base of RO players from the mod, and I am not sure why that is. The game is taken to a whole new level without death messages.

    I do agree that TKs should still be tracked, but I think that is still in place with DM set to off.

    Nice post nightstalker. I hope more clans/servers in RO and other games start moving towards a no death message environment. Hopefully we’ll see more and more alternate, team oriented scoring mods too.
