Score Whoring in the Tactical Realism Community

March 28th, 2006 by NightStalker

Lately I have been appalled at some of the things I have seen going on during play on some TR unit servers in the community. As mentioned before, every unit in this community is diverse. However we share a common bond, that bond is teamwork. No matter how different one unit is from the other, most units encourage teamwork to the fullest extent.

Recently I have seen a few units who will remain unnamed pop up in this community and completely disrespect fellow units and ignore teamwork. Rather than working for a team victory, they care only about personal scores.  You will see these players rush to the enemy spawn as soon as the round starts to see if they can catch people off guard and get a few quick kills before they are killed. When asked to slow down and play tactically or to follow certain rules, these are the players you will see arguing with Server Admins.

When a member of the community called one of these new units out about teamwork, the response given was “We dont care whether we win or lose. We only care about owning and having high scores.” This is not the attitude of a Tactical Realism unit, these players clearly Do Not care about this community or any of the well respected long time units in it: they merely use spawn rush tactics to try to get the best score on the server.

Dont get me wrong, there are days when the only thing I want to do is pop on the server and Destroy the Opposition but, even in that mindset I still focus on working with my team, combining my skill with the rest of the team to achieve victory. Im very proud of this community and I keep good relations with everyone in it so, when I see new units that pop up and give TR a bad name, I speak out about it. This is a warning to all potential newcomers to TR who may be looking into joining one of the community’s many great units: don’t be fooled by score whores of the community who care not about teamwork but personal achievement.

The other night on our RO server I experienced a pair of players on the Russian team that chose the anti-tank class and would jump into an armored car and race past all the objectives and right through the Axis armored formations coming out of spawn. Once behind the armor they’d jump out of the vehicle and go prone, and then tank hunt. The result was devastating - the axis armor would have to chase around the infantry attempting to wipe them out, but this meant they pulled their attention away from the allied armor they were dueling with.

I asked them to stop what I considered RnG. However, as I thought about it, I could not say for sure if this was NOT a legitimate tactic even though it felt wrong. Additionally it occured to me that the only reason this tactic was working was because the axis was not supporting their armored units with infantry.

My irritation was that it smelled of RnG score whoring ‘tactics’. But on the other hand they were acting as a team and while they were ignoring objectives, they were allowing their team to accomplish objectives since they were pinning down, tying up the axis armor.

This scenario is not related to what NightStalker saw on a CoD2 server (which sounds like it clearly was not in the spirit of TR gameplay), but I bring it up because as an admin enforcing TR rules I find myself walking this fine line between what is TR and what I think is TR. Usually I defer to “would a real life soldier do this”? Would a pair of Russian AT soldiers sacrifice their life to tie down an entire platoon of panzers? Probably given the stakes on the Eastern Front for a Russian soldier.  So were these guys RNGing/score whoring, or were they an effective arm of their team?

You bring up a good point Veteran, “Would a soldier do this in real life?” In the case I was referring to the answer is no, A soldier would not lone wolf on his own, away from his unit and rush an enemy stronghold by himself to see how many enemies he can kill before he dies.

What Nightstalker describes is clearly violative of the tactical player/team work player “code of ethics” as it were. a score whore is a score whore. the thing you mention D6, is rather dicey. By and large the little russian armored cars are abused for suicide tactics by the satchel charge guys for sure. not sure about the AT rifle guys. did they have any cover? were they at least steathly once dis-embarked from the armored cars?

Night, I agree with what you’re saying but that’s not suprising imho. You can have elements within a ‘tac’ team act that way from time to time. People will also profess being a proponent of tactical play but when called to the carpet with a game like RO, they are quickly found out. If they are advertising tactical play and do nothing of the sort, they’ll be called out by many more.

In regards to D6’s experience, I think he were right to question their mode of arrival behind the tanks. Would a soldier in ‘real life’ go through the ranks of the tanks to jump out and flank behind a group of tanks? No. Would they arrive near a town where tanks are at and use the cover of the buildings and their surroundings to ambush the thanks? Yes. It’s their behavior to get behind the tanks that should not be allowed, not the act of working as a team to bring the tanks down. If the German side would have had just a couple go after them as infantry they probably would have been persuaded to discontinue their actions without a warning from an admin.

That is why I dislike games that promote the whole concept of moving up in rank…BF2 and even COD UO to some extent. People want those points so they can get the extra goodies, and they will get those points any way they see fit.

Now, D6, about the guys with the AT weapon that used a certain mehtod to get behind the enemy tanks…I have read many times that the Soviets did some crazy things to take out tanks, and yes, even rushing through a group of armor that had little or no infantry support. Of course the Soviets that did this knew their life was going to be short lived. Remeber also, just because you are ignoring an objective doesn’t mean you are not helping take the objective. Anyway…I gues it is all in the “objective” of these guys…were they trying to get to the top of the score board, or were they doing something smart.

the russians used to ram damaged tanks into german ones. even if it was out of ammo or the gun stopped working…they also would strap satchel charges to them and run at the tanks as well as the japs..also russian tanks would drive into a german formation and attack it from behind it was done often and even used y the british and americans against the panzers on the west because armor is less thick on the back…

now to the point..if someone on the team ordered them to do it then its tactical team play. im on a team and at times im ordered to do thins i wouldnt normally do but they help the team out in the end and its teamplay so yes that was not run n gun additude that was doing what you can with what you have to help your team win….
